Bible passage Matt 18:21-22 - Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”

Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

Forgiving someone who has wronged us is not at all easy especially when there is no love but hatred and anger. I have struggled with this but not until I realized the importance of LOVE.

Earlier I thought I should forgive only when I receive an apology, but life has its own ways of revealing the truth. There are times when the one who has wronged you is unapologetic. What are you, as a child of God, expected to do? Hold a grudge? No. You are to forgive even when it hurts, even when nothing makes sense.

Forgiveness is so important in our lives, yet we oftentimes overlook it. The Lord’s Prayer has become a meaningless chant. How can you set things right with God when you have not reconciled with the one who you have wronged or the other way round? Did you at least make the effort?

Jesus teaches us what to prioritize in Mathew 5:23 and 24 where it says “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift”.

Forgiving someone or apologising first does not make a person a loser - it is a brave act. Jesus died on the cross so that our sins could be forgiven. What made him do this for such ungrateful, unapologetic people like us? It was LOVE. Love is so powerful it melts a heart of stone. Jesus knew this when he said love your enemies, because without love it is impossible to forgive. Love keeps no record of wrongs as is written in 1 Corinthians 13 so when you forgive, don’t bring it up again during an argument .

1 Peter 4:8 says 'Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.'

So let us forgive so that we might be forgiven. Let us love because Christ Loved Us First.
