Handling Suffering

Updated: Feb 23

By Jerritta

Suffering is universal and we go through it at various times and phases of our lives. While it is the spill over from the Adamic sin, we may or may not have control over the various hardships we see around us. The misery we face may be due to our sins or due to our faith. As children of God, we need to be sure that we do not suffer due to the former but be ready to stand up for our faith, no matter what. Christ is our example, and we should follow His steps. He has overcome the world, and so can we! (John 16:33, I Peter 2:21).

Why does God allow suffering? Suffering brings glory to God and enables us to experience Him better. Though we may not understand what we are going through now, we need to be clear that it is a part of God’s big picture. We not only draw closer to God and grow in Him but also fulfil the purposes He has for us.

I Peter 4:12-13 says not to be surprised at the hardships that have come on us but rejoice in it as we participate in the sufferings of Christ. Fixing our hearts on Jesus gives us the inner strength to persevere and go through hardships in the right way. Remember, these trials are momentary (II Cor 4:17) and we have the assurance of God who is with us always to the very end of ages. (Matthew 28: 20)
